In the case of older drives - I wouldn't alter the basic mounting. WebHere are the results: There was no difference in performance when the drive was both formatted and tested horizontally or vertically. When the drive was placed in a different orientation than the formatting, the performance took a hit – as much as 1 MB/sec and as little as 300 KB/sec. Interesting results.

The most important thing in a drives life is writing to the sectors. Current versions of NTFS do a write leveling (Novell was doing it in the 80's) that will use all the disk surface.
